Build 27. Plumbing Part 3 - Dry Sump and Oil Catch Tank

The next part of the plumbing involved connecting up the dry sump silicone hoses. There is one hose for this and it looks like this:

The left hand part of the hose with the right angle will fit on the engine as shown in the images further below, and the hose will need cutting so it fits nicely on the dry sump (use a Stanley knife as it goes through this like butter)

The dry sump utilises the oil catch tank, you will need to cut a hole in the top of your tank slightly smaller than the diameter of the hose which was easily done using a drill, and then a Dremel to finish it off. I also filed it down to make it look a bit more professional looking!

Once this is done, you can then work on installing the hoses. It was fairly straight forward to cut the piece from the engine to the dry sump and attach it. I then used the off cut and put it in the dry catch tank and measured another cutting point for the other end on the overflow of the dry sump. I cut the piece with a 45 degree angle on the bottom so it doesn't cause any issues if it rests on the bottom of the dry sump catch tank.

The other thing to note here is that the rubber tube coming out of the tank at the top is just to let it breathe. It is advised that you bend it over and attach it to the chassis pointing downwards to tidy it all up as seen in the photos.

Below shows how it is all looking so far, I'll be cable tying it all up once I have it all in place, then I can make it a really neat job.

I then fit the 3 dry sump oil pipes, these were easy to identify as they had blue nuts on the end of them and each one was a different design so easy to identify what went where. The picture in the current manual (v2.3 2024) was incorrect for one of the pipes, so I'll try and describe them here:

  • The pipe labelled "39C059" has two "obtuse" angles on each end, it goes from the rear of the engine sump to bottom of the dry sump tank. I routed it above all the chassis bars. (Picture 1)
  • The pipe labelled "39C060" has one acute angled end and one straight end. This goes from the front of the engine sump to the left hand side lower oil radiator. I routed the first part under the chassis bar and the rest above, it has to go direct as it is just long enough. (Picture 2)
  • The pipe labelled "3AE212A" has two right angles facing opposite ways. This goes from the top of the dry sump tank to the right hand side lower oil radiator. (Pictures 3 and 4))

Hope this helps anyone else clarify what is meant to go where. There is also a wiring loom which has one earth (black wire) and two (brown and black) wires. Caterham have said this is not used, but I have decided to plug the two wire terminal into the dry sump tank sender just in case, on advise of other blogs.
